Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program
Eligibility Information
To receive services under the Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program, your total income for the household must not exceed 150% of the federal poverty level (click here to view the 2009 poverty level percentages chart).
Once minimum income eligibility criteria is established, priority is then given to vulnerable households; particularly those with the lowest incomes that pay a higher proportion of household income for home energy.
Vulnerable households include members who are:
- Elderly
- Disabled
- With children age 5 or younger
- Total household income at or below 100% of the FPL.
Types of services that are available:
- Utility bill assistance (heating and cooling energy)
- Deposits for new residence
- Late fees
- Reconnect fees
- Delivery fees
- Franchise membership fees
- Air conditioner
- Window Heat Pump Room Air Conditioner
- HVAC purchase, repair or replacement
What do I need to have?
- Must be a US Citizen or proof of legal residency
- Proof of income for the entire household
- If employed, copy of a check or statement from the employer for the last 30 days worked
- Copy of driver’s license or pictured ID card
- SSN Card (required for all members of the household)
- Copy of current utility bill
- Proof of emergency (see some examples below)
- Job loss, illness, or death of primary income provider
- No home energy (heating or cooling) at current residence
- Burn-out, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, ice storm or flood
- Cooling or heating necessity due to adverse effects of extreme weather-related temperatures.
- Empty or low fuel tank
- Rent eviction notice
